In Latvia the competition for Sustainability in Architecture, Construction and Design has been held for the last 9 years. The competition is organized by the NGO Building Design and construction council (BDCC) www.buvniekupadome.lv) to draw attention to examples of very high level sustainability of buildings and ideas.
The patron of the competition, a member of the European Parliament, is Prof. Dr. oec. Inese Vaidere:
I invite architects, constructors and designers to submit projects to the Sustainability competition – it is a commitment of the EU to convert the promises of the European green deal into reality, thereby improving our daily living space. Within the European Parliament’s New European Bauhaus working group, we are thinking and planning how to make sustainability and environmentally friendly urban planning, architecture and design become part of our daily routine, and moreover to make it accessible to everyone, independent of their income.
State Real Estate views sustainability as an undeniably permeated and related factor to every field of work – nowadays it is the base of business strategies and processes, therefore the future without it is unimaginable. In the construction and real estate management sector we are aware of the significant impact on the environment, where buildings account for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, one of our tasks is to create a healthy state property portfolio, which will also serve the future generations of Latvia. We have embarked on the digitalisation of the industry, the use of new technologies in construction and building management, which is a step towards sustainable buildings, but there is still a long way to go. No one yet has the perfect range of tools to renovate, build and manage buildings as sustainably as possible, but the industry is introducing a variety of new methods and solutions in architecture, construction and design. We can only achieve our goals by working together, sharing expertise and learning from each other, evaluating what we have done and setting future goals.

In nine year it has received lots of entries, and most of them are rich in ideas which can be copied in other projects, said the sustainability construction expert Hadley Barret.
In 2022 the local competition for Sustainability in Architecture, Construction and Design has been transformed into an international event, inviting entries for construction projects and student ideas from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and other countries. The deadline for the submission of applications is June 30, 2022. The jury will consist of experts from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – the most recognized practicing specialists.
The Gala ceremony will take place at 6.th of September 2022 on the International Day of Sustainability, which always starts with a conference in the morning.
Each of the sites submitted to the competition will be evaluated according to several sustainability parameters – visual solutions included in the project, use of materials and their origin, resource saving solutions during the operation of the building, lighting and daylight, as well as the provision of a microclimate.
